A Short Biography of Tulku Losang Namgyal Rinpoche

Tulku Losang Namgyal Rinpoche was born in 1970 in Morea, Raniban VDC ward no.-4, Okhaldhunga to mother Man Maya Tamang and  father Dal Bahadur Tamang.

In his previous life, he was abbot of the Old Tamang  Monastery Trust of Swoyambu ( Dubkhang Choeling Monastery) and  was known as Mahasiddha Yogi Maila Kaji Tamang. His real name was Durga  Bahadur  Lama. His father’s name was Chakra  Bahadur Lama Tamang and mother’s name was Sukrani Lama Tamang.

According to Rinpoche himself, he died at the age of 42 and was given birth to by a woman of a Newari family in Lyeng Lyeng, Betani village in the Ramechhap district.

When he was six months old and it was the of the child rice-feeding ceremony, he became aware of his previous life and also his future. However, he again died after a very short time. Later again he was reborn into his present life in Morea village, Okhaldunga, and when he started to speak as a child ,he started to talk about his former life.

He was then brought to Kathmandu from Okhaldunga in 1975 for the first time and started to reveal the events of his former life : such as recognizing his former monastery, home and family, and all the objects that belonged to him in his previous life.
His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa recognized the six year old boy as the reincarnation of the former abbot of Swoyambhu Monastery, Maila Kaji Tamang. He then gave him the name Karma Namgyal Gyurmey Dorje at  Kanying Shedupling (White Monastery) at Boudha, Nepal on March 10, 1976. Rinpoche then beagan to study Buddha Dharma with Venerable Lobsang Gendun in 1976 at the Maitriya Bihar, Swoyambu. He  was ordained as a novice monk by Kyabje Serkong Tsenchab Rinpoche  and given the Thubten Samten in 1978.


Rinpoche was  then brought  to Pal Hogmin Jyangchub Choeling ( Kopan Monastery) to study and was given basic teachings by Lama Thubten Yeshe And received the name Losang Namgyal Rinpoche. Later , he took teachings on Buddhist wisdom and method from Kyabje Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche and Khensur Rinpoche Geshe Lhundrup Rigsel.
Then in 1993, he started to travel abroad and continued his further studies on Buddhism under the leadership and guidance of Kyabje Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche , and later, in associated  with Lamas , Tulkus and khenpos. He traveled to many places and countries and became involved in many various activities to spread the Dharma.

Rinpoche received the transmission of Guru Yoga and the precepts of fully ordained monk from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, in 2003. He also received initiations , transmissions and explanations of the Buddha Dharma , Secret Treasures. Tantras and Mantras from  His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Kirti Tsenchab Rinpoche, Geshe Lama Konchog, Lama Yeshe Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche,Kyabje Khensur Geshe Lama Lhundrup Rigsel, Kyabje Denma Locho Rinpoche( Dharamsal), Kyabje Geshe Senge (Mongolia), Kyabje Serme Khenchu Dakpa Rinpoche , Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche , Kyabje Chogye Trizin Rinpoche , Kyabje Sakya Trizin Gongma Rinpoche , Kyabje Jyangche Losang Tenzin Rinpoche and many other high Lamas.

He was enthroned by Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche of the Shechen Monastery on the 8th February,2010 at Chhorten Tashi Tamang Monastery, Jorpati Kathmandu. Later  on 5th August 2010, H.H the 14th Dalai Lama , Gyalwang Tenzin Gyatso officially recognize Tulku Losang Namgyal Rinpoche as the reincarnation of Mahasiddha Yogi - Lama Maila Kaji, the abbot  of the Old Tamnag Monastery Trust of Swoyambu ( Dubkhang Choeling Monastery).He was then enthroned in a traditional ceremony by Khensur Rinpoche Geshe Lama Lhundrup Rigsel , on 18th August 2010, at Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu according to  the wishes of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

  He established the Buddhist Awarenes Center in 1998 in Kathmandu in order to disseminate the Buddha Dharma and carry out social service activities especially for the Tamang society and followers of the Himalayan Buddhism. His activities include teaching programs, building or renovating prayers hall, stupas, Mani Prayer wheels and so forth in the more remote areas of Nepal.
Through the BAC , he has also conducted  social welfare activities  such as building schools , providing smokeless stoves, solar lights and as well supporting a regular medical camp every  year in conjunction with Dr. Detlev Guek of Germany and other medical personel.

Rinpoche plans to build a academic Monastery – ( where the monks and nuns can study proper Buddhism and  as well modern education). Rinpoche also plans to build more schools ,meditation centers, a hospice and an aged-care home and continue working for the well-being of all sentient beings and world peace through the Namgyal Rinpoche Foundation Nepal.
